Surgical instruments perform the function of holding,cutting,suturing and dissecting among others.Most surgical instruments are made of stainless steel because that can be easily cleaned,disinfected and maintained.There are hundreds of models.The easiest way to explain surgical instruments is to cover the basics.
Scissors
There are many different varieties of surgical scissors.Some surgical scissors have blunt tips while others have sharp pointed ends.Surgical scissors has either straight or curved blades.Curved blades make some cutting requirements easier to perform.Other types of surgical scissors ,like the Mayo scissors,have short cutting blades that are intended for cutting thorough thick or hard tissue.In contrast ,Metzenbaum scissors have extremely long blades for cutting in and around tissue that is more delicate.The spring scissors design make it easy for right and left people to use it ,and are mostly used in micro dissection,microsurgery or ophthalmology .

Gold handle is an indication the scissors have a tungsten carbide insert ,which will make the cutting surface stronger and more resistant.
Black handle indicates a serrated blade.This type of scissors will gave a cleaner cut The serration will prevent the slippage of the blades and can be used by left handed peoples.
A combination of gold and black handle indicates one tungsten insert blade and one serrated blade.
